CANCER SUPPORT NURSE MANAGER
REPORTING TO: CHAIRPERSON OF THE Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre
(GKCSC).
HOURS OF WORK: Tues – Thurs 9am – 5pm.
CONTRACT TYPE: Permanent

WHO WE ARE: OVERVIEW OF ORGANISATION
The GKCSC is based in Drogheda, County Louth, and supports those
living with cancer, their families and those who care for them. The
Centre offers holistic care, complementary therapies, education and
psychological support for those living with cancer. The centre is open
to people on the Island of Ireland. All therapies and supports are
provided free of charge.

and privacy at all times. The CNM is responsible for promoting
diversity and inclusion, ensuring services are accessible and
responsive to the unique need of individuals.
RESPONSIBILITES:
DIRECT WORK WITH CLIENTS
* Be responsible for providing direct psychosocial, non-clinical
support to individuals living with cancer, their family and carer
givers.
* Conduct client consultations as part of the initial engagement
process for the purpose of identifying appropriate supports and
services suited to the individual.
* Be responsible for the onward referral to onsite counselling and
cancer support groups.
* Monitor client’s progress and provide supports / services as
needed.
* Provide clear and accessible information, advice on any
cancer-related issues to clients, their family and carers and offer
appropriate support and direct the person(s) to other sources of
information and practical supports where necessary.
* Be responsible for planning and coordinating the day-to-day
management of client services and maintaining productive professional
relationships with key stakeholders.
* Contribute to the promotion and continuous development and
evaluation of the services, raising the charity profile within the
hospitals, the local community and North East region.
* The ethos of the centre will be at the forefront of the role of
the CNM ensuring that a sanctuary of reflection, retreat and recovery
is maintained in keeping with the mission of the centre at all times.
* Act as group facilitator for support and networking for
individuals affected by cancer. This includes the planning and
preparation of groups and any follow ups that may be necessary.
* Plan, coordinate and collaborate with professional colleagues to
deliver cancer related workshops, programmes and classes suitable to
the needs of people affected by cancer.
* Document activities of the centre, including statistics on the
number and demographics of clients seen, number of telephone / email
enquiries and satisfaction with service provided.
* Record and input all client data onto GKCSC’s central system and
where relevant, all hand written documentation must be uploaded / or
recorded digitally in a timely manner.
ACTIVITIES SUPPORT AND OUTREACH
* Contribute to the development of the Charity’s policies and
procedures.
* To recognise, respect and promote the different roles and
diversity of the individuals within the team.
* Communicate to the Chairperson of the Board insights gained from
the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) and the Irish Cancer
Society (ICS) Affiliates Networking Groups towards the development of
new and innovative programmes relevant to service needs.
* Conduct formal and informal evaluation of programmes, adapting
services based on evolving client needs and report back to the
chairperson as required
* In conjunction with the fundraising manager, orientate and provide
formal supervision and mentoring of volunteers. Write evaluations and
complete other paperwork necessary for the volunteer programmes.
GENERAL
* To adhere to the standards of professional nursing practice as per
the Code of Professional Conduct (Nursing and Midwifery Board of
Ireland (NMBI) *).
* Ensure continuous development by; availing of educational
opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining and
developing professional networks; participating in professional
organisations.
* Maintain a knowledge base on developments in cancer care and of
resources / services for clients with cancer, particularly in the
catchment area.
* Perform general tasks and other duties as assigned e.g., Attend
team meetings and various events as required.
* Duties and responsibilities may be subject to change taking into
account the development needs of the service.
PERFORMANCE MEASURES:
* Take part in annual performance appraisal with the Chairperson or
designated board member.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
* Registered General Nurse with recent experience, in cancer
nursing.
* Be on or eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board
Ireland (NMBI).
* Counselling and/or psychotherapy qualification or willing to work
towards same.
* Experience facilitating support groups.
* Computer literacy (Microsoft Office)
DESIRABLE:
* Post graduate registration qualification in cancer nursing
(minimum of diploma level qualification)
* Facilitator for the Irish Cancer Society’s Thrive and Survive
Self-Management Programme (CTSMP) or willingness to work towards same.
